Honest tech advice for a sector that's drowning in vendor pitches

Energy & Sustainability — Advisory

The cleantech software market is overwhelming — and expensive to get wrong

The energy and sustainability sector is flooded with technology vendors. Carbon accounting platforms, ESG reporting tools, energy management systems, IoT monitoring solutions — every conference has a dozen exhibitors promising transformation. And they all want annual subscriptions starting at $30,000.

As a sustainability consultancy, energy company, or environmental services provider, you know you need better digital tools. Your team is spending too much time on manual data entry, your clients want real-time dashboards, and your compliance reporting takes weeks instead of hours. But picking the wrong platform means burning budget, frustrating your team, and potentially being locked into a system that doesn't fit how NZ regulations actually work.

The challenge is that the people selling these tools have a vested interest. Salesforce wants you on their ESG Cloud. SAP wants you on their Sustainability Control Tower. Meanwhile, what you might actually need is a well-structured spreadsheet, a $200/month tool, or a focused custom build. Our Advisory service cuts through the noise with recommendations based on your actual needs, NZ-specific compliance requirements, and honest budget realities.

What Advisory includes

01

Technology landscape assessment

A thorough review of your current tools, manual processes, and data flows. We identify where technology adds genuine value vs. where a process improvement is the real answer.

02

Vendor-neutral evaluation

Independent comparison of relevant platforms — from enterprise solutions like Envizi to NZ-built tools like Carbonreduce. No partnerships, no referral fees. Just honest analysis of fit.

03

NZ compliance mapping

Assessment of your digital needs against NZ-specific requirements: ETS reporting, Toitu certification, MfE emission factors, EPA compliance, and emerging climate-related disclosures under the FMA.

04

Digital roadmap

A prioritised 12-18 month plan for your technology investments. What to tackle first, what to defer, build vs. buy recommendations, and realistic budget estimates.

05

Team & capability assessment

Evaluation of your team's digital maturity and capacity. Recommendations for training, hiring, or outsourcing based on what you're trying to achieve.

How Advisory works

01

Initial consultation

A 90-minute session to understand your business, your pain points, and your ambitions. We explore what's not working and what success looks like for your specific situation.

02

Research & analysis

We dig into your current systems, interview key team members, evaluate relevant technology options, and assess NZ regulatory requirements that affect your digital needs.

03

Recommendations report

A clear, written report with prioritised recommendations, vendor comparisons, budget estimates, and a phased implementation timeline. Presented in person with time for questions.

04

Ongoing advisory

Monthly advisory sessions to keep your technology strategy on track as regulations evolve, new tools emerge, and your business grows. Available for as long as you need.

What you walk away with

Technology clarity

A clear, jargon-free understanding of what your business needs digitally — whether that's a $50k custom platform, a $200/month SaaS tool, or better use of the software you already have.

Confident investment decisions

Stop guessing on technology spend. Make informed decisions backed by independent analysis of your options, NZ compliance requirements, and realistic ROI projections.

Regulatory readiness

Understand how upcoming NZ climate disclosure requirements, ETS changes, and evolving Toitu standards will affect your technology needs — and be prepared rather than reactive.

Avoided costly mistakes

The wrong carbon platform or energy management system can cost $100k+ in licensing, implementation, and team disruption. Advisory costs a fraction of that and prevents expensive missteps.

Frequently asked questions

No. Advisory is an independent, paid service. We regularly recommend off-the-shelf tools, other specialist providers, or internal capability building when that's the right answer. Many advisory clients never engage us for implementation — and that's fine. The value is in the guidance.

We understand the practical technology implications of the ETS, EECA programmes, Toitu and carboNZero certification, MfE emission factors, EPA compliance, and the FMA's climate-related disclosure regime. We don't give legal or regulatory advice — but we know how these frameworks affect your digital needs.

Not at all. In fact, smaller firms have the most to lose from a bad technology decision. A $30k platform subscription that doesn't fit is devastating for a five-person consultancy. Advisory helps you invest wisely at any scale.

Advisory engagements start with a fixed-fee assessment phase. Ongoing monthly advisory is available through our Advisory plan. The cost is typically 5-10% of the technology investment it informs — and prevents far more expensive mistakes.

Many clients do, but there's no obligation or expectation. If you move into a Scale or Launch engagement with us, the advisory work directly informs the project scope — nothing is repeated or wasted.

We can assess the digital and operational requirements of Toitu certification and whether your current systems can support it. For the certification decision itself and the carbon accounting methodology, you'll want a certified assessor — but we can recommend who to talk to.
